|Return to athletic function|
For horses intended to return to their intended function, pastern arthrodesis is indicated.
Conservative treatment of degenerative joint disease with the expectation of spontaneous ankylosis resulting in soundness is unpredictable.
In the early phases of the disease, before advanced degenerative changes occur it is possible to maintain functional use of the horse through the use of local and systemic anti-inflammatory therapy.
Other indications for this technique include simple fractures (left) and subluxations (right) involving the pastern joint that do not result in significant palmar / plantar instability.
