Malleoli Transsyndesmotic, posterior, lateral simple fractures, and deltoid rupture - ORIF

back to skeleton

Lateral approach

The longitudinal lateral incision is the standard approach for most fibular fractures.

Posterolateral approach

The posterolateral approach gives direct access to the Volkmann fragment.

This approach also allows fixation of the fibular fracture, with a plate placed on the posterior surface.

Safe zones for anterior approach

Inserting percutaneous instrumentation such as pins or transfixion wires through safe zones reduces the risk of damage to neurovascular structures.
