- Prone position
The prone position is used for posterior approaches to the popliteal area, or for the repair of posterior wounding, neurovascular surgery, etc.
Position the patient prone on a radiolucent table.
Place cushions under the chest, pelvis, distal thigh, ankle and eyes, to avoid pressure sores.
Apply free draping of the involved lower limb. Put bolsters under the lower leg to flex the knee. This relaxes the sciatic nerve and protects it.
Make sure that the involved knee is fully visible using image intensifier control in both AP and lateral views.
