General considerations

Salter-Harris II fractures with lateral metaphyseal wedges are uncommon and are mostly seen in children aged under 5 years.

Salter-Harris II fractures with medial metaphyseal wedges are exceedingly rare and will not be considered further.

Note: In children younger than 2 years of age, Salter-Harris II fractures of the distal humerus can be a sign of nonaccidental injury.
