Main indication: Inability to obtain closed reduction and/or inability to obtain stable pin pattern

Skill: Basic surgical experience, no specialized skills
Equipment: Basic equipment only

Indications

  • Multifragmentary fractures that are unstable (length or angulation) with K-wires alone
  • Inability to obtain closed reduction
  • Inability to obtain stable pin pattern
  • No availability of image intensification

Advantages

  • Usually good functional results
  • Can be performed without image intensification

Disadvantages

  • Requires longer hospital stay
  • Imprecise control of position at union
