Main indication: Multifragmentary fracture in adolescents and young adults; ESIN not available or providing insufficient stability; distal meta-diaphyseal fracture

Skill: Highly experienced and skilled surgeon
Equipment: Full specialized surgical and imaging resources

Plating is the standard technique for treating forearm fractures in adults and is therefore primarily indicated for skeletally mature or nearly mature children.

It is an alternative in younger children where ESIN is unavailable.

  • Unacceptable reduction after conservative treatment
  • Secondary displacement after conservative treatment
  • Refracture

  • Cast-free rehabilitation

  • Image intensifier not required

Disadvantages

  • Risk of infection
  • Neurovascular injury
  • General anesthesia required
  • Second anesthetic required for implant removal
  • Scar(s)
  • Potentially prolonged bone healing time
  • Demanding technique
