Distal forearm Extraarticular fracture of the radius with dorsal displacement or tilt

General considerations

These are simple extraarticular fractures with impaction and dorsal tilt. These are often referred to as Colles or Pouteau fractures.

They are usually stable in their displaced position, which may, or may not, be acceptable.

Any patient who has had a fall on the outstretched hand may have sustained an intercarpal ligament injury; these may easily be missed on initial clinical assessment.
