The patient is positioned supine on the operating table. The arm rests on the side table with the shoulder in abduction and internal rotation, and the elbow in flexion.

Supine for medial approach

The patient is positioned supine on the operating table. The arm rests on the side table with the shoulder in abduction and external rotation, and the elbow in extension, or slight flexion.

Prone position

Prone position

The patient lies prone with the arm on a radiolucent support, or a padded post. Either gives maximum freedom to approach the elbow.

Positioning of the patient in lateral decubitus with the upper arm supported by a padded post.
