1 Treatment topenlarge
Arch bars are applied to the teeth and MMF is secured. The patient is monitored for positional changes of the mandibular ramus using x-rays. At 6 weeks MMF is released and fracture stability determined by manipulation. The patient is placed on a soft diet and if the occlusion maintains for a two-week period, the arch bars may be removed.

The following x-rays show bilateral minimally displaced closed fractures through the mandibular angles.
Pretreatment occlusal relationship
An anterior open bite malocclusion is the result of minimally displaced bilateral angle fractures.
Closed treatment via mandibulomaxillary fixation (MMF) was selected for this patient because the patient preferred treatment as an outpatient. The arch bars were placed using local anesthesia.
"Postoperative" x-rays following closed reduction and MMF show good alignment of bone fragments ...
... and reestablishment of occlusion.
Patient underwent 6 weeks of MMF. Photograph shows final occlusion.
OPG shows restoration of normal occlusion and good healing of fractures.
