1 General considerations top

Proximal forearm fractures require control of forearm rotation to increase fracture stability.

Advantages are:

  • Lower risk of stiffness
  • Easy to remove and reapply
  • Earlier functional use of arm
  • Inexpensive

2 Immobilization with a sling top

The injured arm is supported with an arm sling.

Pitfall: The sling should go around the shoulder and not the neck to avoid neck pain.

Alternative types of sling

Alternatively a broad arm sling may be used.

Some surgeons prefer greater stabilization of the arm to the body. This can be achieved by wrapping the arm as illustrated or using commercially available devices.
